〔Artist Statement〕
Having moved frequently in my life, I came here to Japan to find myself. During that journey, I let myself go too much; I lost myself by giving the love I had to the wrong people. It took time, but finally I realized that I was full of love all along, that I had it in me to bloom. While I experienced much loss, heartbreak, and difficult partings on my journey, I discovered much love, joy, strength, beauty, and growth as well. I tended myself like a flower, allowing time enough  that sides of me I never knew existed could grow and bloom.

My artwork, then, attempts to capture fleeting moments during this journey: of memory, growth, self-reflection, sensations nearly forgotten, and the gentle, warm feeling of love.

Working in a variety of media, including acrylics, gels, watercolours, pencils, and ink on wood, I play with textures and transparencies to bring forth a soft dreamy feel to the world I want to create. Mixing media also allows a sense of reality to emerge, revealed by the unrefined contrasts it creates.

My recent work aims to unravel self-doubt, insecurity, and isolation, and by doing so, grace these things with acceptance, positivity, and clarity. It is okay to feel deeply and be in love. I want people to discover the beauty and value in themselves and their emotions as they reflect on their own experiences while engaging in the interpretations I present of my own.

Et si on s’aimait?
On est tous belles comme des fleurs.

What if we loved ourselves?
Like flowers, we are all beautiful.

Flowers bloom when we give them water, sunlight, love, and patience. And like flowers, we all have the potential to bloom. Every person, every single one of us, have a bud inside waiting to be found and nurtured. While we are all different, we are also all the same. We walk different roads, but share the same pains and joys. There are ugly sides to each of us: insecurity, envy, guilt, sadness. But we possess beautiful sides waiting to be discovered as well: our gentle soul, our giving nature, our resilience. Like flowers, we need love and patience to nurture these beautiful sides of ourselves.

My work aims to inspire viewers to look inside themselves and discover the beauty and love previously thought to be lacking. If we learn to love ourselves a little more,  we can give ourselves grace, and realize that we all have the potential to grow into our best selves.

I hope you find your flowers and that your flowers bloom. I hope one day that we all bloom like flowers.

Sylvia Haw is a Canadian painter and illustrator from Montréal, Québec. She has been painting since she was a child. She studied in Fine Arts in Cégep du Vieux-Montréal, an art college, before changing her major to pursue nursing. She then worked as a nurse and as a freelance artist in Montréal, painting murals for Japanese bars and restaurants. She moved to Japan fully focusing on her art. She is also the creator of the brand meromero, which focuses on sending bright, positive messages via cute illustrations on a wide variety of products, including apparel, stickers, skate decks, and other accessories.

In her art, Sylvia draws inspiration from the things she sees, the people she meets, the hardships she endures, and the feelings she experiences—both good and bad. She uses flowers, water, mountains, clouds, and fish as poetic objects. They float within the worlds she creates, held in place in the midst of transience, addressing dichotomies such as reality versus illusion, inside versus outside, permanence versus ephemerality.

Sylvia paints to evoke feelings of comfort, warmth, gratitude, serenity, hope, and love... intangible, indescribable feelings. She paints to inspire dreams and moods. Ephemeral moments lie at the heart of her work and its vision.
